被形容為幾十年來最勢均力敵的英國國會大選，執政的保守黨表現遠遠優於預期，出口民調顯示，它不但保住了國會最大黨地位，而且席次增加了，可望攻佔316席，雖然還是沒有過半，但是已經是很大的驚奇，工黨的平均得票率則減少了百分之18，只能拿到239席，這樣的結果完全讓人跌破眼鏡，不過在正式的結果沒有出爐前，誰也不敢把話說死，選情崩盤的自由民主黨黨魁撂話，如果出口民調正確，他會在BBC的節目上，當場吃掉自己的帽子。
如果出口民調正確，這將是英國三十多年來，執政黨在選舉中，增加席次最多的一次，首相卡麥隆無疑得到了一次史無前例的信任投票，對工黨而言，則是一個重大的打擊。
